Through this innovation grant, Vanderbilt Dyer Observatory will bring their unique activities and equipment to campus, combining science and art, six times (November – April) during the year. These exciting Art-Science Mashups, led by Dyer staff and astronomy graduate students, will provide experiences in combining science and art in new, thought-provoking, and creative ways. Participants will learn how to take pictures with a telescope, create sketches of celestial views, play the greatest musical instrument of all time (the sky) with AstroCantus, sing to the newly released science song album The Mighty Sky, and see wonders that will be remembered for a lifetime!

Minor in Creative Enterprise and Public Leadership

The proposed Minor in Creative Enterprise and Public Leadership is for future leaders from any discipline who seek to harness their creativity for the public good, along with those who need training in the theories and methods of creativity and innovation in hopes of becoming pioneers and leaders in their field.

The program offers students the opportunity to develop their core creative capacities: 1) an aptitude to invent and imagine, 2) the expressive agility to communicate an innovation’s advantages and consequences, 3) the dexterity to develop and implement those innovations within their field of choice, and 4) the ability to critically evaluate whether products, practices, and policies positively impact the public good.

The program will be truly interdisciplinary, harnessing the expertise of faculty and knitting together theories and methods from diverse disciplinary threads: art, communication, design, engineering, ethics, media studies, music, organizational and entrepreneurial studies, psychology, political philosophy, public policy, and sociology.

Students integrate the minor with their anchor disciplines through their capstone thesis or creative project. By design, the CEPL minor cannot stand alone and relies upon students’ mastery of their respective disciplines.

Creative Campus Courses

Spring 2012

Creative Campus Course: Humanities 161 Creativity and Crisis
Professors Bruce Barry, Vanessa Beasley, Steven Tepper and Mel Ziegler

Everyday is a new crisis. We are surrounded by global forces that challenge leaders and citizens to live, work, and govern differently. But, do we have the creative capacity to respond to these crises in ways that advance social well being, justice, peace and prosperity? HUM161 will bring together expertise from from sociology, management, communication, and art to explore the fascinating intersection of creativity and crisis.

This one-time spring 2012 course will be team-taught by 4 of Vanderbilt’s top teachers with guest appearances from experts near and far with real world experience managing, reporting and analyzing crises.

SUNDAY, APRIL 1, 2012 – BLAIR SCHOOL OF MUSIC

Witness history. Make history. Join VORTEX and Artistic Director Michael Holland in the centennial birthday celebration of John Cage and his 50-year collaboration with Merce Cunningham. Rare archival photographs, audio clips, and historic film footage let Cage and Cunningham speak to you as VORTEX performs with former members of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, just off their historic international farewell Legacy Tour.

PLUS: COMPANY ROSE, Nashville, Tennessee – Marsha Barsky & Erin Law, choreographers.

Nashville’s Company Rose joins the program in a historic restaging of the ‘lost’ Cage work, Fads and Fancies in the Academy, created by Cage and 1940s modern dance pioneer, Marian Van Tuyl, and originally subtitled A Gentle Satire on Progressive Education. For the first time since the original performances, Company Rose and VORTEX reunite Cage’s uncharacteristically rhapsodic program music with choreography, created by Marsha Barsky and Erin Law, informed by Van Tuyl’s film footage and personal notes.

1:30 – 5:00 — MINI CAGE SYMPOSIUM, CHORAL REHEARSAL HALL

Musicologist David W. Patterson, performance artist Amelia Winger-Bearskin, composer Stan Link, film scholar Jonathan Rattner, and Joanna Harris, archivist of the Marian Van Tuyl estate, showcase Cage’s work in music, art, dance, and film.

About Blair Percussion VORTEX

Blair Percussion VORTEX performs historically relevant and strikingly contemporary repertoire. It embraces the free spirit of invention that animated and informed the early writers for percussion who broke rules, defied ingrained traditions, and crossed disciplines, giving voice to an art that could speak to the modern age. Following John Cage’s dictum “Percussion music is revolution,” VORTEX enthusiastically courts composers, actors, engineers, choreographers, filmmakers, lighting designers—artists of all stripes—to form enduring partnerships that mirror real-world performance opportunities.

VORTEX is as much about a way of approaching performance as it is the repertoire performed. Concerts are highly curated, taking into account the sum of the visual, dramatic, and musical parts. Recent hybrid collaborations include the theatrical adaptation of The Tell-tale Heart for percussion and actor, live accompaniment of silent film, and several commissioned percussion works. The roster of artistic collaborators includes engineer/musician John Harrison, electric violinists Tracy Silverman and Daniel Bernard Roumain, actor Jim Lovensheimer, electronica/remix artist Brad Bowden, composer Jeffery Briggs, world-renowned CRASH founder and composer Mary Ellen Childs, and in 2012, former dancers of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.

VORTEX is bold, innovative, and cutting edge, regularly crossing the line between conventional chamber music and unexpected theater. Students in this group bring strong percussion performance skills, an eagerness to take on daring, new musical challenges, and an interest in being prepared as 21st century musicians. In 2010, VORTEX was named “Best Next-Wave Student Music Ensemble” by Nashville Scene arts critic Russell Johnston.
